Detail and contour surveys for planning and design
A detail and contour survey records the existing site information needed by architects, building designers, engineers, planners and other consultants. It creates a measured base plan showing relevant features and levels so proposed work can be designed around the actual site.
AIM Surveying completes detail and contour surveys for houses, additions, duplexes, granny flats, commercial properties and development sites throughout Wollongong and all of our service areas.
What can be shown on the survey
The required information depends on the project brief and council, designer or consultant requirements. A survey may show:
- Existing buildings, structures, walls, fences and visible improvements.
- Ground levels, spot levels and contours.
- Kerbs, driveways, paths, road features and access points.
- Trees, significant vegetation and other relevant site features.
- Visible pits, services and drainage features.
- Neighbouring features where relevant and accessible.
- Boundary or title information where it forms part of the agreed scope.
Why local site conditions matter
Local properties can be affected by steep terrain, escarpment foothills, established development, coastal conditions or restricted access. Accurate levels and a clear representation of the site help the project team assess building heights, earthworks, retaining, drainage and the relationship between proposed work and existing improvements.
Before we attend the property
Send the property address, your designer's survey brief or checklist, available plans and the purpose of the survey. Confirm whether access is available to the entire site and whether adjoining information, floor levels, roof levels or particular services are required. Providing the brief before fieldwork helps avoid missed information and a second visit.
Detail and contour survey FAQs
Does a detail survey automatically define every boundary?
Not always. A detail survey and a cadastral boundary survey have different purposes. Boundary investigation can be included where required, but the agreed quotation should clearly identify that scope.
Can the survey be supplied to my architect or engineer?
Yes. Tell us who requires the information and their preferred file or plan format when requesting the quote. We can confirm the agreed deliverables.
Do you need access to the whole property?
Usually, complete access produces the most useful survey. Locked areas, vegetation, dogs, tenants and inaccessible structures should be discussed before the field visit.
